当十八岁时，我常常弹吉他。我的吉他没掌握好，但是我弹得不错。

现在我三十七岁了。我忘记了怎么弹吉他。因为我喜欢弹吉他，于是我再练习吉他。有朝一日我会弹得很熟练。

我知道汉语比弹吉他有用。我觉得汉语很有趣，吉他也很有趣。

这是关于我的吉他爱好。

每天我坐火车。当我坐火车时，常常我看书。最近我看书我的《HSK》书。

上星期一个中国女人看到了我看书。在我的火车站她说：“你好！我是中国人。你的汉语很好！”。所以不回答，因为我很害羞的。我笑了；我低头了；我出去了火车。

我要说对不起对那个中国女人。我知道谈话别人很难。下次我加油。

大家好！

上星期是我的生日。我家人送我漂亮的礼物很多。我爸爸送我一瓶酒。因为我比张飞喜欢喝酒，所以我很开心。我妈妈送我一张影碟。那张影碟关于议论冥想。我觉得冥想有意思。

我要多写。

我需要多写。如果每星期我写，我就觉得我有练习很好。所以我每星期天写。

今天在上课我们复习中文词和字。我们复习一百词。在十一月我需要知道八百中文词。加油！

我的老师告诉我词“做”和“造”不同。还现在我知道词“火锅”（huǒ guō）。火锅是好极了中国菜。我喜欢火锅！

我开始演奏吉他。我觉得演奏着吉他很难，但是我喜欢演奏。

One of the words today was 弄 (nòng, “mess with; handle; fool with; do; manage; fix; play with; toy with”).

When I get one of these new words I try to use it in a sentence to help me remember the word, and also to help with me with my sentences (at which I am not very good). To check my work I use Google translate, and a Mac OS X only widget.

While both of these items are great pieces of software, and I love using them, online translators in general seem not to work very well.

For example, my test sentence (which may be wrong): “我弄这个电脑。”. I would expect that to translate to something like “I mess with this computer”, or “I toy with this computer”. However on google I get:

I get the computer.

and on my widget I get

I make this computer.

Both do not seem correct to me, and I have a hard time figuring out if my sentance is bad, or the service is bad. Sigh… someday…

Every once in a while I understand a complete sentence without trying, and I get very excited. I’ve found that watching kids cartoons in Chinese is a great confidence builder because I have a higher likelihood of understanding everything.

While in Chinatown the other day I found a box set of a cartoon from Japan that had the dialog completely redone into Chinese. It is a fabulous show! It’s entertaining and I can understand quite a bit of it.

I don’t know the name unfortunately, because it’s in Japanese (I think), but here is a shot of the main characters:

The boy and the cat (I think that’s a cat with no ears from what I can tell) run around and get in adventures. If you can find the box set, I recommend you check it out. It’s nice learning material.

Another nice resource is YouTube.com. If you search for “Chinese cartoons” you will find quite a few small clips that are also very useful. Here is my playlist for Chinese cartoons:
